5 Steps to an Instant Warehouse Makeover Using Industrial Warehouse Curtains

5 Steps to an Instant Warehouse Makeover Using Industrial Warehouse Curtains

The cost to remodel your existing warehouse can climb upwards to the tens of thousands depending on the desired layout of your facility. New construction build-outs can be equally expensive as the site has to be completely re-configured to suit your company’s specifications. If you are looking to create an instant transformation that will give your warehouse space a whole new look without significantly impacting your bottom line; then here are five steps you can take right now using industrial warehouse curtains.

Step One: Decide How You Would Like Your Industrial Curtain to Function

There are a variety of reasons to use an industrial warehouse curtain in your facility. Your first step in this process is to decide the goal of this curtain in your facility. Are you looking to divide your warehouse in order to separate temperature zones? If so, you may want to consider a thermally insulated curtains. Perhaps you are looking to block a manufacturing process visually so that visitors cannot see into that area. In that case, a solid colored, single layer curtain would be the best fit. Should you need to dampen or absorb sound in your facility, or enclose machinery for noise purposes, an acoustic curtain may be the way to go. Whatever the reason, it is an important first step to identify the function of the industrial curtain wall and the location you’d like it to be placed in.

Step Two: Choose a Color

Industrial warehouse curtains come in an array of colors from sleek and modern neutral tones to eye-catching tones that are both bold and bright. The amount of color options available will allow you to match your industrial curtain wall to your warehouse or your company colors. A logo can also be applied to your industrial curtain for further customization and branding.

Step Three: Measure Up

Industrial warehouse curtains are made to your size specifications, so it is important to measure the space that you’d like the curtains to cover. In terms of width, you should measure out the raw opening that you want the industrial curtains to encompass. This can be between two walls, spanning vertical columns, or in a totally open area. When you measure the width, make sure to note any structural members that you’d like the industrial curtain wall to include or spatial constraints that it will need to work within.

In terms of height, it is important to measure the height from your floor to you ceiling. If you have a sloped ceiling, you should measure the heights at the lowest point and the highest point. Additionally, if you do not want your industrial warehouse curtain to go all the way up to your ceiling, please measure the height that you do want the curtains to run to.

Step Four: Accessorize

There are a variety of accessories and add-ons available for your industrial warehouse curtain. If it is important that your industrial curtain wall is air tight, you will want to consider adding a filler panel, floor sweep, valance, or velcro edge sealing as needed. If you are concerned about your curtain wall blowing around due to ventilation or winds in your facility, D-ring tie downs or a chain weighted bottom could be valuable assets. Additionally, putting a vision panel or a logo into your industrial curtain are other options that will subtly add a more aesthetically pleasing design to your warehouse space.
Enclosure With Air Filters

Step Five: Install

Most facilities that purchase industrial warehouse curtains install them on their own. The curtain and track systems are designed for user friendly installation. However, if your facility does not have the capacity or does not feel comfortable installing this system, you can use a recommended installer in your area.

Industrial curtains can instantly improve functionality and enhance the layout of your warehouse. AmCraft Manufacturing offers an incredible tool that guides you through the steps needed to help you create a curtain wall system that is customized specifically for your warehouse needs.

Adapting to Overhead Cranes

Adapting to Overhead Cranes

Overhead cranes

are designed to lift and move heavy loads. In manufacturing facilities, this equipment can be used across a variety of industries, such as automotive and aviation. In warehouses, overhead cranes can be used to move any manner of bulky goods as they are stored, organized, and loaded for distribution. While essential to many facilities, overhead cranes can also present a challenge when it comes to the division of space. Large manufacturing plants often need discrete working spaces for different operations, while warehouses need that separation for the storage of different product types. How can facilities adapt to overhead cranes while using their space as efficiently as possible?

ABOVE THE CRANE

When a curtain is mounted above the crane rail, it is essential that it does not interfere with the crane’s movements and functionality.

The curtain panels above the crane can be mounted parallel to or perpendicular to the crane as long as there are existing structural members available to support the curtain panels or strips.

AmCraft's PVC Strip Curtain

BELOW THE CRANE

Because the hardware for the curtain panels cannot be suspended from the ceiling, we offer a Free-Standing Track System, up to 12’ high, with 12” x 12” floor mounting plates.

The plates are used to secure each upright (upright support has a recommended spacing interval of 5’). This Free-Standing Track System also allows the curtains to be retractable.

AmCraft's Freestanding Industrial Curtain

Creating Separate Spaces

Businesses need a way to separate areas to maintain temperature control and humidity control; to protect from contaminants; and to manage airflow. Building more walls to divide the space within a manufacturing plant or warehouse is not always feasible in terms of cost and utility, particularly when the facility has to use overhead cranes.

Overhead cranes can lift, lower, and move horizontally, making them a versatile tool, but they need to be able to move freely throughout a facility. Above the crane rail, strip curtains present an effective solution for creating the necessary isolated divisions within a facility without hindering the movement of overhead cranes, as well as equipment like forklifts.

Below the crane rail, some customers use the free standing track system (outlined above), and other customers opt to hang a cable. This cable would need to be strung between two structural supports. Depending on the width of the cable and how well it is tensioned, the curtain could sag a bit in the center of the width; however it still offers a sturdy solution for hanging any of the following curtain solutions:

  • Single Layer Curtains – Separate space, control air movement
  • Thermal Curtain – Separate temperature (available in 5 different R-Values)
  • Acoustic Curtains – Separate Noise and Absorb Sound

Challenges to Consider

While strip curtains are the answer for many manufacturing facilities and warehouses with overhead cranes, they are not a one-size-fits-all solution. Each facility has a different layout and different needs. Before deciding to get a quote on strip curtains, take into consideration:

  • Ceiling configuration. How does a facility’s ceiling come into play if you need to separate space above the overhead crane? Suspended mounting of strip curtains can accommodate easy movement of an overhead crane, but the measurement and installation of the curtains will depend on the slope of the ceiling. Will the cut of the curtain match that slope exactly? A suspended mount requires a one-inch overlap with the strip door bracket and the curtains.
  • Airtightness. While strip curtains allow for movement of overhead cranes, it remains important to ensure airtightness of certain areas. Curtains need to be precisely measured to allow equipment to move where necessary and to stop airflow as soon as that movement is completed.

Construction Wars: The Battle for Prime Warehouse Space

Construction Wars: The Battle for Prime Warehouse Space

Ecommerce is a rapidly growing industry that requires vast amounts of warehouse space. The growth trajectory is expected to continue with approximately 95 percent of purchases expected to be made in the ecommerce space by 2040, according to 99firms.

The warehousing industry is responding to the increased need (thousands of new facilities have opened over the past 12 years), but that growth is still struggling to keep up with the demand, according to Supply Chain Dive. Why is warehouse space so difficult to find, and how can businesses find the storage solutions they need to thrive?

Warehouse curtains logistics amazon distribution

The Shrinking Availability of Space

With ecommerce giants like Amazon taking up a sizeable chunk of the available warehouse space, companies are finding the logistics of storage increasingly competitive. This is particularly true in crowded, high-demand markets like cities. Urban centers are already crowded, and carving out space for new commercial operations like warehouses can mean stiff competition to find available space, rezoning, and other development hurdles. As a result, the process of bringing available space to these markets is often slow and expensive.

When companies do find their space, the price can be high. The price of leasing warehouse space has significantly increased in recent years, in some places even doubled, according to Digital Commerce 360.

Building New Options

Building more space is one solution to the lack of warehousing options or adding on to an existing space. Construction projects, of course, take time and significant investment to complete, while companies are in dire need of a solution now. While new construction is inevitable, considering that demand for space will only continue to grow, businesses need a flexible solution that can be easily implemented on a short timeline.

Flexible Alternatives

Third-party logistics is a growing industry, thanks to industry demand. Companies are outsourcing warehousing to free up their own space and streamline their supply chains. Major companies, like Walmart, are using on-demand warehousing platforms that essentially operate as pop-up spaces, according to The Wall Street Journal.

These third-party services are a strong contender for companies that do not have their own storage infrastructure. But, these 3PL and on-demand companies have the same challenges as companies that do handle storage in-house. How can the existing storage space be used for the maximum benefit?

Many companies are learning how to repurpose existing storage space to handle the constant influx of goods across varying industries. Warehouse curtains can create effective divisions of space in storage facilities. More flexible and less expensive than installing fixed walls, warehouse divider curtains can create enclosed areas for different products and warehouse operations.

AmCraft’s industrial warehouse curtains provide solutions for blocking light, dust control, temperature management, and more. The PVC vinyl material of the curtains are durable and easy to clean, important features for the busy operations of the warehouse space. Warehouses that need a more fixed division of space solution can opt for stationary curtains, while warehouses in need of more flexibility can opt for the installation of retractable curtains. AmCraft allows even more room for customization with the option to select opaque curtains or curtains with vision panels. Businesses are also able to select the curtain color to match their facility’s branding.

If your business is looking for a solution with a faster lead time, AmCraft also offers stock industrial curtains, a standardized solution that meets a wide range of needs in the warehousing industry.

The needs of a warehousing space often change to keep up with the needs of customers. If your business is moving to a different space, your curtains (unlike stationary walls) can come with you and be configured to the new facility. Curtains can also be helpful if your space is in the process of a construction build out and in need of temporary workplace divisions.

Create your curtain today and experience why AmCraft’s selection of industrial curtain walls are a cost-effective solution for your warehouse space.

Acoustic Curtains and Industrial Applications

Acoustic Curtains & Industrial Applications

Industrial workplaces are inherently noisy. Machines run all day to produce goods, and workers use forklifts to move material. High noise levels can lead to workplace accidents, distraction, and even hearing loss for those working in these environments. Industrial workplaces of all kinds can manage noise levels with the help of acoustic curtains.

Industrial Noise

Approximately 22 million people are exposed to dangerous noise levels in the workplace each year, and nearly half of manufacturing workers have been exposed to hazardous noise levels. There are several ways to reduce exposure to high noise levels. Workers can wear earplugs; employers can invest in quieter machinery, and workplaces can strategically place barriers between workers and the sources of high noise. Reducing a few decibels can go a long way toward protecting employees in industrial settings.

Acoustic Solutions

Acoustic curtains can serve as that barrier between employees and high noise levels. Industrial acoustic curtains explicitly designed for industrial applications are made of solid PVC-coated polyester, which is durable and easy to clean.

Industrial workplaces can opt for different acoustic curtain solutions depending on their needs. Acoustic curtains with Single Barrier Technology and Double Barrier Technology can be mounted on a track system and configured to fit the needs of various industrial spaces. The curtains can create an enclosure for the noisiest equipment or an enclosed, quieter space for employees to take a break.

Acoustic curtain walls with single-barrier technology have an average sound transmission coefficient (STC) of 34.5 and an average noise reduction coefficient (NRC) of 0.82. The acoustic curtain walls with double-barrier technology offer an even higher decibel loss, with an average STC of 47.5 and an average NRC of 0.64.

Industrial workplaces can also use acoustic baffles as a standalone solution or with acoustic curtain walls. Baffles are designed to be mounted on walls and ceilings. Acoustic baffles absorb sound and minimize echoing within a space.

Putting Acoustic Curtains to Work

Discover the versatile applications of acoustic curtains and baffles in a range of industrial settings. From construction sites to warehouses and manufacturing facilities, these sound management solutions can be tailored to your specific needs, empowering you to create a quieter, more productive environment.

  • Construction sites. In the midst of the cacophony of tools and forklifts, acoustic curtain walls stand as a practical solution. These walls can be strategically placed around the work site, effectively managing the sound of different tools. They can even include doorway panels and windows, ensuring easy access for the crew while maintaining a quieter work environment.
  • Warehouses. Warehouses may be used as industrial storage facilities, but that does not mean they are noise-free. The warehouse goods must be moved for storage and transport, which means heavy-duty equipment and big teams of people. Acoustic curtain walls can effectively divide warehouses into different sections, reducing noise. Acoustic baffles can add another layer of sound management, particularly helpful in large warehouse spaces likely to have echoing sound.
  • Manufacturing facilities. Manufacturing goods is a major industrial process that involves noise all day long. Acoustic baffles can be hung from walls and ceilings to reduce echoes in large manufacturing facilities. Acoustic curtain walls can be used to create quieter spaces in the facility. For example, administrative areas and break areas could benefit from the sound barrier provided by acoustic curtain walls.

Winterize Your Warehouse with Insulated Industrial Curtains

Winterize Your Warehouse with Insulated Industrial Curtains

Winter is coming. In fact, in many areas winter has arrived earlier than expected. With the change in seasons comes drastic shifts in the temperature. Is your facility weather-proofed? Here is a quick three step checklist to follow in order to winterize your warehouse and get weather ready:

1. Check Your Loading Dock

The loading dock of your warehouse or facility is typically the primary source of energy inefficiency and where your building will most likely experience the highest loss of hot or cold air. Creating temperature separation with industrial insulated curtain walls form an effective barrier between your dock area and the other work spaces within your facility.

3. Flex Your Temperature Control

The most important aspect to consider while getting your facility optimized for temperature change is flexibility. Consider the 3 P’s of workflow management: People, Production and Practicality. Will creating separation and insulating certain areas improve the comfort level of your employees? Will this newly enclosed work space require entry and exit points for easier accessibility? Is it practical to erect a permanent wall versus installing an insulated industrial curtain wall that can be relocated if necessary should your spatial needs change? Temperature control curtains certainly can offer the cost-effective flexibility you need to weather adapt your facility.

AmCraft Manufacturing crafts insulated curtain wall solutions that speak to the importance of flexibility and adaptability by offering custom sizes and stationary or retractable mounting options. One of AmCraft’s best-selling temperature control curtains is their 4” thick semi-flexible stationary insulated curtain wall which can be customized to a maximum height of up to 40ft, which is exceptionally higher than the industry standard.

When the big chill hits it’s best to be ready. One of the best decisions you can make for your facility is installing an energy-efficient, temperature control curtain wall solution. How to Build Out Your Warehouse and Create Separate Spaces Using Industrial Curtain Walls

How to Build Out Your Warehouse & Create Separate Spaces Using Industrial Curtain Walls

In many ways, business and the buildings they are in are just like the people who work for them- each is different. When a company chooses a new employee, they carefully evaluate which person will fit best with their company culture, their needs, and their overall goal. Likewise, when a building to house a company is chosen, that building has to be picked based on the best overall fit with the concerns of the business.
The same can be said of modifications and customizations done to a facility. Each company will need its location to function differently, and will set their building up so that it runs as efficiently as possible. One key component of this is

space division, separating processes,

creating designated spaces for lunch rooms, offices, etc. In many ways, an industrial curtain can play a vital role in this and is uniquely designed to make a large scale project seamless and easy to tackle.

When a large facility is in need of space division, the custom fabricated nature of industrial curtains makes them an ideal fit. A large building will likely have many factors to consider. The sheer size of the space to be covered is the first and most obvious consideration. An industrial divider curtain that needs to span a 25 foot height and a 100 foot width, for example, would cause many issues if it were made in one piece. This vinyl divider curtain would likely be expensive to ship, as well as heavy and cumbersome to install. The modular nature of

industrial curtains

make them ideal for covering larger spaces. The curtain can be divided vertically, and made in as many panels as necessary, and each panel can be joined to the next with Velcro, magnets, or snaps. This makes installing the curtain much easier and still gives the look of one large, cohesive curtain wall when the panels are hung and connected.
These

industrial curtain wall

systems can also be made in multiple panels horizontally. This typically comes into play when a facility has a pitched ceiling and also needs to block off the space all the way up. The lower panel, called the industrial curtain wall, will sit at the lowest elevation. The upper panel, called the filler panel, is made to fit the size, shape, and slope of the facility’s ceiling. Here again, the modular nature of industrial curtain walls makes them a great fit and allows for easy install on a large scale.
Another advantage of using an industrial curtain system for a large space is that the method of installation is always the same for the entire system. These systems are designed to be user friendly, and about 90% of our customers end up installing these themselves. AmCraft strives to make the installing process as seamless as possible, mainly by using one type of mounting system for the entirety of the industrial divider curtain. So even if your curtain wall is 150 linear feet in width, you will be using the same hardware and process repeatedly to hang the entire industrial curtain. This makes mounting the curtain system both simple and approachable for large scale projects.

A Creative Way to Boost Insulation Value with Industrial Thermal Curtains

A Creative Way to Boost Insulation Value with Industrial Thermal Curtains

As we move into a cooler time of year, many of you will start to focus on the temperature in your facility. Typically an HVAC technician is called in to check up on furnaces, heating vents are unblocked, and additional insulation may be added to existing walls and ceilings.

Another option for assisting with insulating your facility, especially if it is an industrial facility, are industrial thermal curtains. These are industrial curtain walls with insulation inside of them. These thermal industrial curtains can assist with beefing up the insulation level of an entire facility, or sectioning off certain areas for additional insulation. Additionally, these thermal curtain walls can be moved if need be, or taken down when cold temperatures let up; two benefits that traditional insulation options don’t typically boast.

As an example of the potential effectiveness of these thermal insulated curtains, a test study was done. A customer in Texas has utilized our 1” insulated curtains, with an R value of 4, in a cold room for food storage. This facility cools the entire room down to 40 Degrees Fahrenheit when they have larger amounts of product to store. When they do not need the whole room, they divide the room with the 1” thermal insulated curtain. They shut the HVAC off on one side of the room, allowing the temperature on this side to heat.

Aviation Curtain
Contact Us Form Mini

The temperature can reach as high as 70-80 Degrees Fahrenheit when not cooled down. The curtain divides the 80 Degree side of the room from the 40 Degree side of the room.

This application utilized the curtain, a filler panel, Velcro on the side edges, and a floor sweep on the bottom, so that the curtain is completely sealed. The customer’s feedback is that between the curtain and their HVAC system, they are able to maintain the two different temperature zones. They do not experience condensation forming on the curtain.

The insulation value of thermal insulated curtain walls is measured by what is called an R value. R value, as defined by standard ASTM C168, is:
“Resistance, thermal, n: the quantity determined by the temperature difference, at steady state, between two defined surfaces of a material or construction that induces a unit heat flow through a unit area.”

Basically, R value measures the resistance to heat transfer across/through a given barrier. The higher the number attached to the R value, the greater the barriers resistance to heat flow is.

Thermal curtain systems can boast a variety of different R value, each of which can be tailored to meet a customer’s needs. While thermal industrial curtains can be a great tool to effectively contain heated or cooled air, it is recommended that you consult an HVAC technician in order to make certain your enclosed area will render the desired net result.

This will assist with confirming that your heating or cooling system has the capacity to deliver a sufficient volume of air heated or cooled to a reasonably higher/lower temperature that is required inside of your enclosure. The thermal curtains alone cannot be responsible for the net effectiveness of the enclosure/curtain system if this is not effectively addressed with available equipment upgrades, if necessary.

When installed properly and used within their means, thermal insulated curtains can be a highly effective tool for maintaining temperature within a facility. The thermal curtain wall professionals at AmCraft Manufacturing can guide you through the process of selecting the best curtain solution for your facility and provide expert advice on how to best insulate or divide your facility. The Benefits of the Suspended Mounting System

The Benefits of
the Suspended Mounting System

There are a variety of methods that can be used in order to mount an industrial curtain track system, each made to fit a different type of ceiling or building structure. The most popular option is a suspended mounting system. Whether you choose to use chain, cable, threaded rod, slotted angle, or strut to suspend your industrial track system, this method of mounting has many benefits and provides a good deal of flexibility.

Suspended mounting of an industrial curtain wall track system is typically chosen out of necessity. Some of the most common scenarios that would necessitate this type of mounting are:

1. If your ceiling is sloped.
It is essential that your track system be mounted level. If the track is mounted on a slope, then the rollers inside of the track will consistently run down the track to its lowest point. This will not only be highly annoying, but will also impede your industrial curtain wall from staying in place and doing the job that you need it to do. Therefore, if your ceiling is pitched, the best way to mount an industrial track system will be to suspend the whole track down to the lowest point of pitch, so that it can run level.

2. If you have obstructions that you’d like your track to sit underneath.
Industrial ceilings very commonly have obstructions in them, such as HVAC ducts, electrical conduit, and bisecting trusses. For a retractable industrial curtain wall to move effectively, the tracking system should always sit below the lowest obstruction in its path. A suspended mounting system will be a great asset in this scenario.

3. If you have a drop ceiling.
Drop ceilings, or acoustic tile ceilings, are very common in the workplace. They typically have a small profile aluminum grid that holds 2’ x 4’ mineral fiber acoustic tiles into place. These drop ceilings are typically suspended with light weight wire from a more substantial ceiling structure above.

Contact Us Form Mini

When running an industrial curtain track system below a drop ceiling, it is not advisable to mount it directly to the drop ceiling. The drop ceiling and its support are typically not strong enough to hold the industrial curtain wall track system. In this case, suspended mounting options would be recommended to support the track system from a structure located above the drop ceiling.

Even if none of the above situations apply, you may still choose to use a suspended mounting system for your industrial curtain track. Once you are committed to this, you will have several options for suspension materials.

Your first option includes chain and cable. These two options are often chosen because consumers believe that they are cost effective, however that is not typically the case.

There are many types of chain and wire cable- ranging in quality and price. Since the entirety of the industrial curtain wall and track will hang from these, it is best to choose a fairly durable and high quality material. Often times, depending on the footage of chain or cable needed, these materials can turn out to be more costly than some other suspension alternatives. Additionally, since chain and cable are not rigid members, they are prone to allowing your industrial track system to swing unless they are firmly anchored into a wall or other building structure.

The second, and most popular, option for suspension is to use threaded rod. This is a very common building material which boasts high strength and low cost. Often times, using threaded rod provides a less expensive option than using chain. Additionally, threaded rod is a rigid material and is far less prone to allowing your industrial track system to sway.

Finally, slotted angle and strut can also be used to suspend your track system. These materials are typically recommended when your track must be suspended more than 7 feet and/or if your facility has issues such as wind that may stress the suspension of the track system. Slotted angle and strut are very rigid structural members, which helps cut down on the track system swaying. Also, these materials have 1”-2” wide flat surfaces on them, so they allow for cross bracing and additional supports to bolster and reinforce the suspended track.

Whichever methods you choose to suspend your industrial curtain track system, please rest assured there is hardware to join the suspension material to your ceiling and your new industrial curtain wall track. The Benefits of Industrial Curtain Enclosures

The Benefits of Industrial Curtain Enclosures

When you’re managing a large facility or warehouse, different projects can often benefit from being separated into their own designated work areas. One convenient way to accomplish this is by implementing curtain wall enclosures. There are a few common configurations for curtain wall enclosures, and if you are interested in implementing these in your workplace, it can be helpful to learn the differences and benefits that each one offers.

1. Floor-to-Ceiling Enclosures

Floor-to-ceiling enclosures create what is essentially a closed-off room or work area, and are the most economical curtain enclosure option. They can be configured to work around existing lighting or fire detection fixtures. Therefore, they are safe to use as complete enclosures.

Additionally, floor-to-ceiling enclosures utilizes your existing ceiling and can accommodate most obstructions. These enclosures can be constructed to meet your size requirements, can include as many entry/exit points as you need and the sides of the enclosure can be made to retract or remain stationary.

Enclosure With Air Filters

2. Suspended Soft Wall Enclosures

The next option is a suspended soft wall enclosure. These enclosures have a suspended metal grid designed to support a soft ceiling cover. One of the key benefits of this type of an enclosure is the option to choose a location against a wall or in a corner that works best with the configuration of your workspace. Suspended soft wall enclosures also enables you to incorporate a sliding industrial track system or a fixed mounting system depending on the solution that best fits your needs.

3. Freestanding Enclosures

Freestanding enclosures provides you with optimal flexibility in choosing a location to install them anywhere within your facility. Although these enclosures are free standing and floor-supported, additional support may be needed from the floor or ceiling depending on the size of the enclosure. They are available with retractable or stationary side wall mounting systems and they have a partially suspended support grid which provide the option of adding a flexible vinyl ceiling cover.

Industrial curtain wall enclosures are not only beneficial for isolating areas within your workspace, but are also a great solution to: reduce noise, block light and/or dust, meet NESHAP compliance for auto body shops, minimize air flow, enhance temperature control. Additionally, the enclosures are manufactured using quality materials, making them a great choice for many different industrial environments.
