How Industrial Noise Curtains Reduce Ambient Noise

How Industrial Noise Curtains Reduce Ambient Noise

In commercial and industrial environments, most interior structures are not built with room acoustics in mind – this is where

industrial noise curtains

can help! In a warehouse or in an office setting, there are different types of sound reducing options available – acoustic sound barrier curtains are one way to help control noise levels and echo.

Noise Reduction Simplified

Sound does not pass through surfaces and/or structures, but rather “activates” a building. The building itself actually transmits sound waves as energy, which moves through the building’s structure. Sound-absorptive batting that is built into the industrial noise curtains converts this energy to heat. The acoustically-rated membrane, which is also built into the curtain, will assist in dramatically reducing the sound from the source.

Consider the analogy of light passing through a window. A light curtain with low-density material will not block all of the light. There needs to be a material that is more solid in nature to effectively block the light. The same is true with sound. Although sound insulation will help with the absorption of a sound wave, it needs a higher-density acoustic sound barrier membrane within the industrial curtain in order to drastically reduce noise.

Warehouse acoustic curtains or industrial sound curtain walls typically use staggered mounting patterns and proper edge sealing to dramatically improve the effectiveness of the sound barrier curtain.

Sound Absorption & Reflective Surfaces in a Warehouse

The absorption of sound is especially challenging when dealing with work areas that have a number of reflective surfaces. Reflective surfaces can be made of metal, glass, granite, cement, cinder block, or other smooth, hard surface materials. In warehouses and other industrial settings, this would be anything from the cement walls, concrete floors, corrugated aluminum ceilings, and steel trusses.

Sound waves, especially the hard-to-block low frequency waves, bounce off these surfaces easily. This is why having the proper acoustic curtain system, in any type of setting with a great number of reflective surfaces, is important. Since warehouses are known for large scale, open areas, the chance for reverberated noise / sound to travel and reflect are much higher than in other settings. An effective industrial sound barrier, whether they are curtain walls or baffles, can cut down and/or can redirect many of these sound wave reflections.

Absorbing Sound from Reflecting Surfaces in an Office

In a more “polished,” office setting, this would include glass windows, metal walls or structures, or floor tiles and/or hardwood floors. Most offices are more intimate, with management and other personnel working in separate workspaces in a larger office area. With people in a more confined space, a greater level of noise reduction is required. Industrial noise curtains soften the everyday office noise that may disrupt the workflow. An ideal solution is the following: install ceiling baffles and/or acoustic wall panels, which provide additional sound reduction along with industrial grade noise curtains. The sound waves will be effectively reduced using the baffles and panels, cutting down the echo. These products would be used in addition to the sound curtains, which will help to reduce noise in areas of the office that require a high degree of concentration, in meetings rooms and in other areas that require a more sound restrictive environment.

Noise Reduction & Large Work Areas

Most large work areas require noise reduction to a certain extent. This can be dependent on the decibel level of noise, the type of noise source, the distance from the source, whether it has a high or low frequency, and the number of reflective surfaces which are present. Sometimes, an office setting can have a “loft feel,” in which there are exposed structures and ductwork. In sports venues (such as a pool facility), water, tiles, open air, walls and ceilingscan all create an excessive amount of reverberant noise. In music venues, the absorption of sound and the proper acoustics are necessary to optimize the sound quality of the music played. Using acoustical curtains in the workplace makes the environment safer for employees and helps to control excess noise that can come from equipment, crowds that gather in large spaces and reverberated noise from all that activity. Find out how you can customize your space for noise reduction with retractable sound curtains, enclosures, ceiling baffles and/or wall panels.

There will always be a need for areas to improve sound attenuation using acoustic sound barriers or industrial noise dividers in the workplace. Contact AmCraft today about your project!

Why and How to Divide a Space with Industrial Curtain Walls

Why and How to Divide a Space with Industrial Curtain Walls

If you work in or manage/own a warehouse or garage space, you know the challenges associated with keeping jobs properly contained. Whether you’re working on vehicles, painting them, or doing anything else within the location, chances are separating out some of the space could be beneficial to your business.

Why?

The “why” of separating industrial spaces is simple – these spaces can be in disarray and can be very loud. Industrial curtain walls provide a simple solution for sectioning off areas to keep grime and substances, like paint spray or oil particles, contained. Additionally, work within a warehouse or garage can be noisy to the point of distracting other workers. Installing curtain walls is a good way to keep that at bay and allow everyone to work to their fullest capabilities. Separating spaces using industrial curtains can also be beneficial for your energy bills, if you cool parts of the building but not others. Dividing spaces can help you further customize where your various utilities, such as air conditioning or even lighting, are used. Even better, separating garages using curtains means that you can repurpose or reorganize the layout virtually anytime you want, since the setup is not permanent.

How?

The process of installing industrial curtains depends on what type of system you want. There are several different types of track systems, but mainly you need to decide what type of curtain wall you’d like to use – industrial curtain walls, insulated curtain walls, or acoustic curtains. Industrial curtain walls are versatile and can be used in many different areas besides garages and warehouses and can be beneficial when used as:

  • Photography backdrops
  • Heavy duty outdoor curtains
  • Paint booth curtains
  • Food storage
  • Food grade curtains
  • Autobody shop curtains

As for insulated curtain walls, these are ideal for sectioning off areas that are kept at different temperatures—such as warehouses that deal with food storage.

Acoustic curtains are most beneficial for loud areas in which sound containment can help boost the area’s efficiency and/or help meet compliance for noise regulations.

Once you choose the type of curtain you need—dependent on what you’ll be using them for—you’ll have an easy time figuring out how to install them within your workspace. If you need help figuring out what equipment you’ll need for installation, the associates at AmCraft Manufacturing will be happy to help you find the perfect fit.

Retractable Acoustic Curtains for Industrial Spaces

Retractable Acoustic Curtains for Industrial Spaces

Retractable Acoustic Curtains

Retractable Acoustic Curtains are used in industrial applications for the purpose of reducing noise from loud equipment in a manufacturing facility. Industrial Acoustic Curtains are a sound blocking curtain panel, sound absorbing curtain wall or sound reducing curtain enclosure that is retractable and can be used in many manufacturing applications.

Noise or sound control is accomplished by blocking or absorbing sound energy. In order to optimize noise control requirements, most often both sound absorbing and sound blocking materials are combined to form a sound attenuating panel, sound attenuation curtain wall, or sound attenuating curtain enclosure that limits the amount of sound energy that can escape.

Retractable Acoustic Curtains reduce noise to required levels

AmCraft manufactures industrial acoustic curtains using insulated vinyl curtains for low level noise reduction. For more of a sound barrier, mass loaded vinyl is added to block more sound energy in order to reach OSHA required decibel levels. The level of insulation and sound barrier materials needed is determined by the application and the amount of noise reduction necessary to meet specific guidelines.

If you have a situation in which a noise producing operation is only performed intermittently, you may want to consider a retractable curtain sound barrier to provide flexibility in its use. Another situation that would warrant a retractable acoustic curtain as a sound control barrier is equipment that may need frequent set up, servicing, or an extreme amount of accessibility from numerous directions.

Retractability of Acoustic Curtains

A retractable acoustic curtain is attainable for most insulated noise reducing curtains. To accomplish retractability, the sound absorbing materials are cut into sections and encased in a thinner, more flexible sound blocking material that is flexible enough to fold and retract.

Velcro separations can be placed between any or all panels so as to build in accessibility and flexibility around the unwanted noise source.

In extreme noise environments, if you have sufficient space for a thicker sound absorbing curtain or sound absorbing panel, you can use 3” thick sections which will increase the sound blocking capacity, but this will impact the retractability. With 3” thick panels your acoustic curtain panel assembly will only retract partially.

Steel Roller Track is used for Retractability

AmCraft’s retractable acoustic curtains work with our standard steel roller track system which can be suspended from any type of interior ceiling or wall.

Features of Retractable Acoustic Curtain Systems

  • With straight track, standard 24” radius curves, and larger than 24” radius curves, almost any configuration can be achieved.
  • Standard panel sizes are 13” or 27” wide
  • 13” wide panels form a stack 13” or 14” wide when fully retracted. (approximately 15% of their extended length)
  • 27” wide panels form a stack 27” or 28” wide when fully retracted. (approximately 8% of their extended length)
  • Optional windows provide visibility into the enclosure
  • Optional floor brackets reduce air movement at the curtain bottom
  • Non-fiberglass exterior is easy to clean

Clear Industrial Curtains

Clear Industrial Curtains

AmCraft Clear Industrial Curtains are a great option for dividing a large warehouse space where visibility is important. Food processing plants and wash bays use clear industrial curtains to divide rooms and workstations. Areas that use a clear vinyl curtain not only contain airborne contaminants and control temperature zones, but the visibility provides better management of workers, a well lit work environment, and more control of what happens inside the curtain area. Worker safety is another important factor in choosing a clear industrial curtain to divide or enclose your work space.

Clear Curtain Walls for Industrial Applications

Clear curtain walls are available with all of the features of other industrial applications that use color panels or light blocking materials. Clear Vinyl Curtain Walls are fabricated anyway you want it, with color trim (to match your environment) and in any size and room configuration. Our seams are sewn for durability, whether it is a free hanging ceiling mounted clear industrial curtain or is attached to floor brackets to offer more stability and less movement from air flow, the seams reduce tearing and damage from abrasion.

Clear Industrial Curtain Material Choices

The clear PVC industrial curtain is available in 12mil , 20mil or 40mil vinyl, and are custom fabricated to your layout requirements. USDA Clear wash down curtains typically are constructed of the heavier 40mil industrial clear vinyl curtain material and is used in most food processing plants. The lighter weight materials are most often used in warehouses or any separated area that requires visibility through all or part of a contained area.

Sound blocking Acoustic Curtains are Retractable for Accessibility

Sound Blocking Acoustic Curtains are Retractable for Accessibility

Sound blocking

acoustic curtains

are retractable for accessibility and easy use in any environment and industrial application. AmCraft manufactures sound absorbing acoustic curtains with insulation to block and/or absorb sound energy. Most often both sound absorbing materials and sound blocking materials are combined to form a sound attenuation panel or sound attenuation curtain to reduce workplace noise.

In order to accomplish retractability, the sound blocking and sound absorbing materials are cut into sections and encased in a thinner, more flexible material that folds to retract into a small space.

This is especially helpful when sound reduction is necessary in a flexible way, the acoustic curtain panels are opened and closed as needed, without taking up a lot of space. Additionally, velcro separations can be placed between any or all of the sound absorbing panels to build in accessibility and flexibility around the unwanted noise source.

If you have sufficient space for thicker sound absorbing curtain panels you can use 3″ thick panel insulation which will increase the sound blocking capacity. However, this thicker panel option does limit how far the acoustic curtains can retract to a space. With 3″ thick panels your sound reduction curtain panel will only retract partially, not flush against a wall.

The retracting acoustic curtain can be used in many applications of noise reduction in the workplace. The insulated acoustic curtain also helps to maintain consistent temperatures and noise control contained inside an acoustic curtain enclosure, or protects the acoustic curtain work area from outside influences. If you have a situation in which noise reduction is performed intermittently, you want to consider a retractable acoustic curtain as a sound barrier. Another situation that would warrant a retractable sound barrier is equipment that may need frequent servicing or an extreme amount of accessibility from numerous directions.

AmCraft’s retractable noise control barrier curtain works with our standard steel track and roller system. This roller track system can be suspended from from any type of interior ceiling or wall. With straight track, standard 24″ radius curves and larger curves almost any configuration can be achieved.

Standard acoustic curtain panel sizes are 13″ or 27″ wide. When retracted, 13″ panels will form a stack that is 13″- 14″ wide, by approximately 15% of their extended length. When retracted, 27″ acoustic curtain panels will form a stack that is 27″- 28″ wide by approximately 8% of their extended length. For more information visit our webpage: AmCraft

Warehouse Curtains divide spaces for temperature control

Warehouse Curtains divide spaces
for temperature control

One of the greatest needs for warehouse curtains is to divide spaces for temperature control . A large warehouse typically is built as one large room, with high ceilings and dock doors. While this layout works well for housing large pieces of equipment, shelving units or stored goods, it is not very energy efficient. With the high cost of heating and air conditioning, a solution is necessary to contain temperature zones of specific areas within the warehouse to create improved energy efficiencies.
Many warehouse facilities have dock doors that are opened throughout the day which makes control of the air temperature that much harder to control and maintain. Whether in warm, cold, humid or dry weather, this constant exposure to outdoor elements makes a warehouse not only uncomfortable for employees, but can affect or damage goods inside the facility.
How to Use Thermal Curtains
Contact Us Form Mini

Warehouse curtains offer control over the indoor temperature and air flow from the outside. Warehouse curtain walls act as a warehouse room divider and provides a barrier wall that contains temperature to a specific area. Warehouse curtains are typically mounted to structural beams or ceiling trusses, and our roller track system allows for flexibility in how the curtains are used. Curtain walls can be retracted at any time to allow passage for moving large items and include strip curtain doors for passage of personnel and fork lifts. Industrial curtain valances fill spaces from the ceiling to the curtain track system to create a custom fit enclosure.

Warehouse curtains are an economical and flexible solution to containing warehouse space. The curtain and track systems can easily be moved or repositioned as needs change. It is best to use a professional and licensed installer for the installation of large warehouse curtain walls. AmCraft industrial warehouse curtains are constructed using heavy pvc material with sewn and rf welded edges for long lasting durability. The vinyl material is easy to clean by wiping down with soft cloths and simple cleaners.

Industrial Curtain Wall

Industrial Curtain Wall

An

Industrial Curtain Wall

is used in many industries as a way to separate space within a larger facility. Many times the division is necessary to control temperature zones. When used in a warehouse, an area is sectioned off to provide a cool space to store products that could be affected by continually changing temperatures and humidity. The industrial curtains contain air conditioned air to that space only, without having the expense of cooling a much larger area to the temperature required for that particular stock packaging. Industrial curtains can be ceiling mounted or mounted to structural beams to provide a fully contained enclosure.

In addition to controlling air temperature, industrial curtain walls are used to section off areas that require limited exposure to airborne contaminates, vapors and overspray. An industrial curtain wall can be used to contain these contaminates inside a work area, or can be used to prevent outside contamination from getting inside the area. The industrial curtain enclosure is flexible enough to use effectively in work areas and can be removed to relocate to another area if needed.

Industrial curtain walls are used in many industrial industries and for a variety of applications. AmCraft Industrial Curtains offer a wide range of colors to match your facility, standard and custom sizes, installed track options and fire rated materials.

Helpful Tips Before Ordering Industrial Curtains and Cleanroom Enclosures

Helpful Tips Before Ordering Industrial Curtains and Cleanroom Enclosures

Consider these

helpful tips before ordering industrial curtain systems and cleanroom enclosures.

Careful planning helps to create the perfect Industrial Curtain Wall or Cleanroom Enclosure for your Space.

Industrial curtain walls and curtain enclosures are used in many business applications to contain a space for a variety of uses. Industrial curtains are used as warehouse curtains, room divider curtains, softwall cleanrooms, hot air / cold air aisle containment curtains, autobody shop curtains and car wash curtains, to name a few.

Industrial Curtain Walls are typically ceiling to floor 14 oz or 18 oz vinyl curtains that are hung on a steel roller track system. The curtain walls are often retractable for the ease of accessibility, and the track can be re-mounted to a stable structure for mobility anywhere within your facility.

To assure a successful curtain project, AmCraft provides helpful tips before ordering industrial curtains or cleanroom enclosures. Here are a few important details to take into consideration before ordering a curtain wall system:

  • Determine if your workspace is near fire, sparks or highly flammable items. This would mean you should order a specific pvc vinyl material that is flame rated and hazmat safe.
  • Is there a sprinkler system in your facility where the curtains will be installed? The curtains need to be installed in a way that complies with your local fire department safety codes.
  • Ensure that the structure will support your curtain wall system or curtain enclosure at the ceiling level. These curtains tend to be heavy and are used typically with roller track systems, so the track system needs to be stable. We can help you determine what the weight of your curtains will be before you order to alleviate any potential problems during installation.
  • If you need to create an enclosure that is airtight, light tight or a cleanroom enclosure free of contaminants, we recommend that you use filler panels at the ceiling level, between the ceiling and the curtain track. These are foam filler panels that are custom cut with perforated, slotted angles that are perpendicular or parallel to your structural deck ceiling to create a fit tight. They are used with a ceiling suspension mount, and are custom cut every 5’ to 8’ the make them malleable enough to be notched, yet strong enough to mount all the way up to the ceiling deck. Heavy adhesive velcro strips are used to attach the filler panels. The foam filler panels also serve as a ‘wall’ of the enclosure to control temperature variances between the inside and outside of the contained area. They provide a custom solution to any ceiling deck and are easy to install and replace.

How to Clean & Maintain Industrial Curtains

How to clean industrial vinyl curtains

At AmCraft, we have a few suggestions on

how to clean industrial curtains

safely. Industrial Curtains are typically fabricated using 14oz or 18oz PVC vinyl in a matte or glossy finish. These heavy vinyl curtains are used in warehouses, autobody shops, technology data centers, food processing plants and other clean room applications. Depending on the requirement and environmental conditions in which they are used, over time industrial curtains collect debris, dust, mold and other contaminates on the surface, edges and track that can affect the cleanliness of the workspace.
Industrial Warehouse Curtains
For effective long use of your vinyl industrial curtain it is important to have a regular cleaning schedule and complete instructions on how to clean industrial curtains. We recommend that you clean the industrial curtains on a regular basis to prevent substance build up and mold that could contaminate the stitching and folds of the curtains. Simple Green is a product that is good for damp cloth cleaning or spot cleaning. It is also environmentally friendly.

Do NOT use a solvent based cleaner, as it could damage the integrity of the material. Rather, use alot of water and a cleaner that has a bleach ingredient. The use of a mild, non abrasive detergent will be necessary to cut through soil or any sort of mildly greasy or oily type film on the curtain. Test a small area first to make sure the cleaner you are using doesn’t discolor or ‘cloud’ the material. Using a cotton or microfiber cloth, wipe down the curtains in a consistent manner to make sure the entire curtain has been cleaned. Then use a clean, non-abrasive dry cloth to wipe down the cleaned area to remove water spots that could form and leave a residue.

Do NOT mix Bleach and Ammonia to use as a cleaner.

For safety purposes, wear eye protection and old clothing when cleaning your industrial curtains.
